From chaos sprouts beauty

A rescued Christmas cactus rewards us with its delicate beauty.

Looking neglected at a local big box home store, Carol rescued this cactus –  it rewards us with beautiful blossoms and lovely leaves of deep green. Here captured in the studio with our Fujifilm FinePix S9900W set on chrome color slide film simulation.

Great-Aunts, Vermont 1930s

Carol’s great-aunts on her mother’s side in a found photograph from the 1930s (we believe). I like this photograph because it’s rather well taken – not particularly well scanned, but for the time period, it’s a rather good picture.

I don’t know what format the camera was that took this but I enjoy the wider view given by the photographer’s perspective. The ladies are well centered (side to side and top to bottom) and in focus. The wider view allows the viewer a chance to take in the surroundings and appreciate the era in which it was taken.

The only post-processing was to take out the sepia tone and give it its true black and white tones.

Yashica Quick-Lite Electronic Flash

Hard to find Yashica accessory from the early 1960s

Chasing Classic Cameras with Chris

We’ve recently added this wonderful electronic flash unit to our collection. Many of the lesser known accessories from Yashica often go unnoticed and become a bit mysterious.

We were lucky to find an almost complete set from around 1962 or so (could be earlier). I believe we’re only missing the instruction booklet and a few minor (but desirable) plastic bags. The box and styrofoam inserts are in excellent condition. The flash works perfectly and more than likely is unused (as is often the case). Image number 3 is from a Japanese Yashica-Mat EM instruction booklet. There are some differences between ours and the one pictured. One has a coiled cord vice a straight cord and the attachment bar and knobs are black vice silver with gray knobs on ours.

Fuji Panorama Cardia – 1991

From the ‘Plastic Fantastic’ period of Fuji Photo Film comes this awesome little 35mm compact camera.

Fuji Panorama Cardia

Lots of good looking plastic.

DSCF6781

Released in Japan in December 1991 for ¥15,800. It features a fixed 28mm Fujinon f/8 lens and a shutter speed of 1/100. Manual winding but with auto exposure and automatic flash.

DSCF6770

The set came with plenty of documentation and a nice padded camera case. We added the roll of Fujicolor for a bit of, you know, color!

We love collecting these “new old stock” cameras from the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s. They were, for the most part, excellent cameras that provided a bridge from complicated SLR cameras to easier to use compact cameras capable of producing high-quality images. Of course, modern smartphones can do panorama photography so why use a film camera? A look that just looks “different” – so analog with all of its imperfections.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Favorite 2017

In response to this week’s challenge, the last one of 2017.

It was extremely hard for us to choose just one favorite for the year. This one wins out just because it wasn’t planned and everything just had to fall into place with minutes to spare.

A very Merry Christmas to all… and a wish for a peaceful 2018. Our “leaders” in America need to take a chill pill and back off on the war talk. As a retired career U.S. Navy Sailor, in my opinion, the best use of our military might is for keeping the peace and protecting the country. NOT playing into the hands of fanatical “leaders” around the globe.

MAINTAIN the peace, CONTAIN your enemies and RESTRAIN our President. It’s easy to drop bombs on people, it takes a real leader to negotiate peace and foster accords.

Peace

Merry Christmas!

All the best, Chris and Carol ^.^

We hope that 2018 can be a year for compromise and accords – not bombs and killings and polarization. As John and Yoko said, “Give peace a chance”.
