Fujifilm Fujichrome Velvia film simulation and a 62-year-old Yashica lens…

Taken in deep shade during the late afternoon so it skews overly bluish which is actually how the scene looked. Nice true reds and again natural greens.

Out of the shadows and into the light the blue sky looks more natural against the deep greens of the trees.

I purposefully shot this high-contrast scene to see how my Yashikor lens handled it. Well, I believe.

I’m always pleasantly amazed by the quality of my images when shooting vintage lenses on a mirrorless digital camera. I believe I took this at f/11.

This is the first time in a very long time that I switched on the Velvia film simulation mode on my Fujifilm X-A10 mirrorless digital camera. I do enjoy shooting my classic film lenses on my camera – I used the Fotodiox L39 – FX adapter to mount the Yashikor lens to the modern camera. You can too… give it a try as it opens up a whole new world of photographic fun.

Let me add that none of these images were cropped in any way nor were they subject to endless post-production manipulation. These are about as straight from the camera as you can get.

Yashica’s Yashikor f/2.8 5cm Gem

A wonderful LTM lens from 1959 was likely made for Yashica by Tomioka Optical for use on their new Yashica YE 35mm Leica-inspired rangefinder camera. The YE was also known as the 35 YE and the 35 E type during its short run.

Here the lens is shown mounted to my Nicca 3-S.

It’s a handsome lens and it looks well-suited for this mid-1950s Nicca.

This one was taken late in the day in deep shade. The Fujifilm X-A10 was set to Velvia film simulation mode. Nice strong colors and sharp contrast.

Canon New FD 50mm f/1.8 Lens Test

Canon New FD 50mm f/1.8 Lens – ISO 200, 1/200 at about f/2.8

I enjoy shooting with my classic (vintage) lenses on my mirrorless cameras as it reminds me just how special these lenses were and still are. They almost have the same look as a film image. Here I mounted the Canon lens to my Fujifilm X-A10 mirrorless digital camera body using a Fotodiox Pro FD-FX adapter. The X-A10 is a 16.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor camera. I simply set the camera to aperture priority and make a few adjustments in the camera’s menu (manual focus) and start enjoying using your old glass again. Yashica Tominon Lens – a hard one to chase

Shown here mounted on one of my Yashica Pentamatics – 35mm SLR camera from 1960.

Not many of these dual-branded lenses were made and with no accurate data from Yashica, one can only guess the actual production numbers. Less than 3,000? Maybe slightly more or a lot less. This serial number can tell a bit of the story. The number on this lens is 350309. The ’35’ refers to the lens’s focal length, which is 35mm. the last 4 digits are simply the sequential number of lenses made up to that point. ‘0309’ means that this is the 309th lens made since the start of production (whenever that was). My guess is around mid-1960.

So, if you’re up for a challenge try tracking down this lens on the various online auction sites. You’ll quickly find out that you’ll be looking for quite a while – but it’s worth it in the end. Thanks for stopping by and be sure to check me out on Instagram at @ccphotographyai – Chris

Yashima Flex – 1954

Before they were known as Yashica they were Yashima and this is one of the first cameras to feature their original name. This is one of the nicest TLRs in my collection and I was thrilled to find it many years ago on an auction site in Japan. The original lenses were marked Tomioka Tri-Lausar and later just Yashinon. Tomioka Optical eventually became part of the Yashica Company.

This is an incredibly difficult camera to find for sale anywhere but a few do show up from time to time. Your best bet is to keep an eye out for one on Buyee (Yahoo Japan Auction) in Japan. Thanks for stopping by! – Chris

Yashica TL Electro X ITS with Auto Yashinon 55mm f1.2 Tomioka lens.

The Yashica-Mat EM has a built-in exposure meter which can simplify shooting with these somewhat awkward cameras. The meter is powered by selenium cells so no batteries are needed. After 50 years most meters have stopped working but I’m lucky mine is still functioning.

The Yashica TL Electro X ITS is a wonderful camera period. Simple and straightforward controls and an easy-to-see and use exposure meter visible through the viewfinder. Here it’s pictured with an awesome Auto Yashinon 55mm f1.2 Tomioka lens.

If you’re on the hunt for a classic film camera to use then certainly check out either one of these. They’re both easy to find in online auction sites or maybe your uncle has one in his closet.
