Canon A-1 1980 Winter Olympics Edition

Complete Canon Olympics Edition A-1 with 1968 Gold Medal winner Jean-Claude Killy pictured on the box (both sides). Killy also appeared in some print advertising for Canon in late 1979 and 1980.

The Winter Olympics were held in February 1980 in Lake Placid, New York so Canon needed someone of note to feature on the box for the A-1 that went into production in early 1979. Since there wasn’t a clear Olympic standout in skiing in the 1976 games, Canon turned to three-time Gold Medalist Killy from the 1968 games in Grenoble, France to feature on the box. Classic Canon AE-1

This beautiful set is dated back to November 1978. It’s a joy to use and it’s as clean as new. I believe it’s one of the best 35mm film cameras from that era.

Shown here with the original Canon FD lens – the 50mm f/1.8 S.C. (Spectra Coated) breech-lock lens.

Happy SUNday! – fun finds

It’s been a busy and productive week meeting with clients. Lots of photo gear to “play” with and lots of new cameras to go on a photo walk with.

I scored a recently hard-to-find fresh roll of this awesome Kodak film.

Not to be outdone by the ColorPlus I bought a roll of this classic from Kodak (fresh through 2024).

A Mamiyaflex C2 is in good working order. I have the interchangeable lenses for it waiting in the wings and a fresh roll of Kodak Portra 400.

I picked up this gorgeous Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 12.1MP camera. It’s a blast to use and produces stunning images (I haven’t turned on the GPS yet).

If only! I purchased three Mamiya sales brochures that I just had to have (since I don’t actually own the cameras).

Although it’s not made by the original Yashica I had to have this “cheesy” camera anyway!

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add this stunning Canon to my collection.

Last but not everything, this like-new Canon Sure Shot 85 Zoom Date 35mm compact point & shoot film camera with a crazy sharp lens.

Canon’s high-speed film eater – 1995

If you were looking for a way to eat through a roll of 35mm film back in 1995 Canon had the answer. Capable of continuous shooting at 10 fps, it was billed as the fastest AF SLR at the time.

We take high-speed shooting for granted today with modern mirrorless digital cameras but 27 years ago it wasn’t easy to get quality images that were in focus and at this kind of speed. I’ve never tested it at that speed as I’m content with single frame shooting and with the cost of film and processing I won’t be eating film with it any time soon.

Canon Model 7 Set from 1962

I’ve decided it’s time to part with one of my favorite 35mm rangefinders – my Canon Model 7. It took quite a while to find this gem but it’s time to move on and let another collector enjoy it. Maybe someone with more free time will take it out for a photo walk. It’s 100% fully working even down to the meter.

The camera is nearly flawless with just the slightest signs of previous use.

It comes with the original instruction booklet in Japanese and I’ve added an English version too. The lens catalog and the products guide are both printed in Japanese and contain some great bits of info and have never seen before (by me) lens and accessories.

A gem from Canon – 1972

The Canon F-1 was released in 1971 and represented Canon’s first professional level 35mm single-lens reflex camera. This beautiful set is from 1972 and features a Canon FD 50mm f1.4 lens.

Complete kit including the correct first edition instruction booklet.

Chrome nose Canon lenses are my favorite.

Early models do not have the film reminder slot on the rear of the film door. Early serial numbers in the 1xxxxx range are your assurances that it’s an early model.

Chasing an early model Canon F-1 has become a bit harder as these cameras are now over 50 years old. Finding one with an original chrome-nosed Canon lens is even harder but certainly worth the effort. Thanks for stopping by! – Chris

Canon AV-1

I’ve added this lovely Canon AV-1 to my online camera shop at http://www.ccstudio2380.com. If you’re not familiar with this model it’s worth your time to read a bit more about it as it has some very interesting features and is super simple to use (it’s a great camera to use when you’re just starting into film photography).

This one is from 1981. A nearly perfect example of this not often seen Canon 35mm SLR. The AV-1 (Aperture Value) camera is pretty unique in that you select the aperture you want on the FD lens and then the camera selects the proper shutter speed for true auto exposure photography.
The AV-1 accepts all of Canon’s FD mount lenses (tons of them to choose from) and works directly with the dedicated Canon Speedlites like the 133A, 155A, 177A, and 199A.

This one is in collector’s condition – it’s that nice.

Load the film, set the ASA (far left dial) adjust the shutter dial (red A), pick an aperture (here it’s set to f8) compose and focus your subject then fire away.

The AV-1 accepts all of Canon’s FD mount lenses which is a bunch!

The AV-1 uses an easy-to-find and not expensive 6v A544 battery that’s sold pretty much everywhere. I buy these batteries online in groups of 5 to save even more.

Canon and the Olympics – 1980 – fun stuff to collect

There’s plenty of Canon Olympic stuff out there – a rather hard one to chase down is the Canon F-1 1976 Montreal Olympic camera in mint (working) condition with its box and although they are easy to find the 1984 Canon New F-1 camera is still quite expensive in mint condition with its original box. There are lots of other Olympic collectibles to be found such as lens caps, bags, jackets, straps, and pins. Have fun with it!
