I recently took delivery of what appeared to be a well-kept Canon A-1 35mm SLR from 1983. It was reported by the seller as in good condition but untested. The lens was specifically listed as clean and clear. As you can see from the pictures the lens is far from “clean and clear”.
It looks great and from my experience with this model when they look this good they generally have no issues.Sharp-looking camera.Canon NFD 50mm f1.8 lens as seen from behind. BTW, the date code (Y1116) to the right of the red dot indicates that this lens was made in November 1984.Opening the aperture blades to f1.8 and shining a bright LED light reveals the hidden issues with the lens – haze and overall edge cloudiness.
I knew the camera was untested (I asked the seller and they said that they didn’t have a battery) so I knew that going in. BTW, the 6v A544 batteries that power the A-1 are quite common and available in stores and online. After checking out the camera with a fresh battery I discovered that the light meter display wasn’t working. The shutter speeds sounded accurate but without knowing if the meter was responding I wouldn’t have been able to trust the camera in full auto mode. The camera also had the infamous Canon “squeal” that happens whenever the mirror assembly’s lubrication dries out over time and from sitting unused for long periods. The squeal is not caused by the shutter as some people believe.
Obviously looks can and often are deceiving and in this case, I could have taken a hit. Fortunately, I was able to return the camera. At this moment I’m waiting to receive my refund.

They’ve always been a favorite of mine for their versatility, design, and functionality. The Canon AE-1 Program is an interesting A Series camera that’s kind of a Canon A-1 “Lite”. I’ve put together this wonderful set for you – a film-tested, super-clean AE-1 Program.

Just in time for your holiday shopping and gift-giving, I have another beautiful Canon AE-1 from my collection. This one comes with a sharp Canon New FD 50mm f1.8 lens. It’s been fully serviced with new light seals and a new mirror bumper pad and it’s been lubed to ensure that there’s no squeal or squeak from the mirror assembly (commonly known as shutter squeal).
The instruction book is also in mint condition. It’s one of the best booklets I’ve ever had with my Canons. Looks new!The Canon AE-1 is one of the easiest Canons made.I also have this one available in my shop.

Although it’s undated my sharp eyes spotted a date code on the lens (rear mounting plate) beginning with ‘S’ which is 1978. The brochure features the new Canon New FD lens lineup and I hadn’t seen it before acquiring it recently in a large camera and photogear purchase.
Lovely centerfold that’s about 17 x 22 inches big!A pretty neat cover shot for this hard-to-find brochure.There’s some nice tech stuff inside in addition to the great pics and charts.The date code that I see is ‘S1105’ for November 1978. Back cover with my dream collection!

Canon New FD 50mm f/1.8 Lens – ISO 200, 1/200 at about f/2.8
I enjoy shooting with my classic (vintage) lenses on my mirrorless cameras as it reminds me just how special these lenses were and still are. They almost have the same look as a film image. Here I mounted the Canon lens to my Fujifilm X-A10 mirrorless digital camera body using a Fotodiox Pro FD-FX adapter. The X-A10 is a 16.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor camera. I simply set the camera to aperture priority and make a few adjustments in the camera’s menu (manual focus) and start enjoying using your old glass again. This beautiful set is dated back to November 1978. It’s a joy to use and it’s as clean as new. I believe it’s one of the best 35mm film cameras from that era.

The Canon F-1 was released in 1971 and represented Canon’s first professional level 35mm single-lens reflex camera. This beautiful set is from 1972 and features a Canon FD 50mm f1.4 lens.
Complete kit including the correct first edition instruction booklet.Chrome nose Canon lenses are my favorite.Early models do not have the film reminder slot on the rear of the film door. Early serial numbers in the 1xxxxx range are your assurances that it’s an early model.
Chasing an early model Canon F-1 has become a bit harder as these cameras are now over 50 years old. Finding one with an original chrome-nosed Canon lens is even harder but certainly worth the effort. Thanks for stopping by! – Chris

I have pictures scattered in different places around the house and studio and sometimes I find an image or two that I forgot I had. This was or very sweet kitty, Candy. We found her in the early 1980s as an abandoned kitten barely alive so we took her in. She grew to be a sweetheart of a cat with some of the softest fur and cutest meow. She was blind in one eye although it’s hard to see which one it was in this pic. Here she’s pictured around 1995. Canon F-1 on Kodak color negative film.
