A true first for Canon Camera Company – 1959

Canon Canonflex

Canon’s first 35mm SLR. This one is likely from late 1959 as the serial number is just below 6,000. If you have a chance to get your hands on one, you’ll see straight away that the build quality is top-notch. This one is in mint condition and, except for the slowest speeds, operates like new. The Canon Super-Canomatic R 50mm f/1.8 lens is crystal clear. It’s also an <E.P> marked body. It shares lots of DNA with my early F-1 from August 1971, which is also <E.P> marked.

Canon’s first 35mm SLR. Released in May 1959.
Although modern and advanced for 1959, it didn’t catch on. Sales were reported as being disappointing. It’s reported that just shy of 18,000 were sold.
My camera’s serial number indicates it was number 5,998 in the first production run. The prism is removable, just like the 1971 Canon F-1.
The film advance lever was mounted on the bottom. Unusual but not unheard of for the period. The <E.P> mark was somewhat common in the 1950s, especially on Canon’s rangefinder cameras.
It looks just like any modern Canon film camera through the 1980s.

It’s claimed that you could shoot and advance up to 3 frames per second!

Canon F-1 Family

My original Canon F-1 from 1978 is on the upper left (with the motor drive)—the Canon O.D. F-1 is my most recent acquisition.
With their original instruction booklets.
With an early Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 chrome nose lens.
OD F-1. A limited edition olive drab version from early 1978.
My earliest model. The serial number indicates that this camera was in the first 20,000 built in 1971. It also has the <E.P> mark.
My only Canon New F-1 with AE Finder.

It’s one of my favorite 35mm SLRs in my collection.

Canon AE-1 Olympic Set

From the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

Classic Canon AE-1 35mm SLR film camera.
Shown with a sharp Canon New FD 50mm f/1.8 lens.
My set will include everything pictured (minus the display stand).
This is the last AE-1 in my extensive Canon camera collection.

Friday Fotos! Canon and Fujifilm

Canon NFD 24mm f/2.8 lens. I should have used a yellow or orange filter.
My 1978 Canon F-1 loaded and ready to go on a photo walk.

I got better results using the meter in the F-1 when using a 1.35v Wein Cell.

The World-famous Palace Saloon, Fernandina Beach Historic District.

Processing and scans were done by The Darkroom at medium resolution. The images below I used a 625A 1.5v battery which, on average made the camera’s meter two stops off.

Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 SSC lens.
In the tight confines of the historic district, a 50mm lens isn’t my favorite lens to shoot with. I’m a wide-angle lens guy.
OK exposure but, I’m not happy with it.
Missed it by a country mile!

I got my Canon big shot! (finally)

Of course, the show’s real star is my Canon EOS R mirrorless digital camera at an impressive 30.3 megapixels. Canon’s white lenses are legendary for their performance under the most challenging situations and conditions.

Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM super telephoto lens with a Canon Extender EF 1.4x II. Combined, it has a focal length of 420mm.
Also included is a Canon Adapter EF-EOS R to mount EF lenses on the EOS R camera bodies.

Canon F-1 ‘Super Set’

None better. My Canon F-1 ‘Super Set’: a Canon F-1 body (1978), a Canon FD 55mm f1.2 Chrome Nose lens (1972), a Canon Motor Drive MF with Grip MF, and finally, a Canon Servo EE Finder. Everything is part of my collection, and everything works as designed. It is a tribute to Canon’s designers and engineers.

It stands tall. It’s not light—it’s not something you tote around on a photo walk. It’s shown here without the Servo-EE finder. It’s certainly better suited for a studio or at a fixed point at a sporting event.
My original F-1 (body only) was purchased at the US Navy Exchange in Yokohama, Japan, in the summer of 1978. The f/1.2 lens and the motor drive were added much later.

I believe it will stay in my collection until I pass it along to another collector at a much later point. I must get serious about thinning my collection over this next year.
