A beautiful day in the garden as our North Florida sunlight warms with its late winter rays. Hopefully, we’re past our hard freezes and we’ll be frost free the rest of the winter.

The Last Leaves

It’s been an odd year for our trees weatherwise and otherwise. What with a prolonged spring drought, wildfires into the summer, the close passage of a tropical storm, and then three well established nor’easters, our maritime forest here on the island has taken a quite a beating. Now we have a second hard freeze. These hardy souls are the last leaves in our yard on a bradford pear tree.

It’s technically a bad photograph – I deliberately shot into the sun under breezy conditions so nothing is in focus. I love the shallow depth of field and the sun rays on the left of the image. I’ll check this morning after sunrise to see if the leaves made it through the night.

Do you explore your yard photographically? There’s so much to see. How about a mossy gate on a fence from a different viewpoint?

Technically all of these images are not properly exposed or focused and lack sophisticated techniques in their composition and received no post-production. They’re just shots taken on a whim – but we like them nonetheless.

Thanks for your visit and have a beautiful day!

Holly Berries – Tuesday

Wandering around the front yard yesterday, the stark contrast between the deep red of the berries and the vivid greens of the leaves caught my eye. Shot with my Samsung Galaxy S8+ with only a touch of post-production on my part. What I like best is that the image doesn’t look digital – it has some texture and depth not often seen with the eye etching resolution of DSLRs.

WPC – Weathered

I find my photography tends to skew towards – weathered “things”, natural and man-made. Here’s a small sample –

Rock On my Weathered Friend

Many thanks to the fine City of Fernandina Beach, Florida – Amelia Island, for providing such a rich palette of weathered things for me to photograph. All of these images were taken within a 3 block area of the Historic District downtown.

Not often seen, roots are a fascinating and obviously important part of every plant.

Windsock – Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport (KFHB) Amelia Island

The City of Fernandina Beach, Florida operates a public access airport on Amelia Island. Originally built by the U.S. Government and used by the U.S. Navy during the later stages of WWII as a training airfield.

An iconic fixture at any airfield – the windsock.

Today the airport provides general aviation services for the public and serves as a gateway to Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach. A new terminal building is currently under construction at the airport and will feature a rather unique design. Updates to follow.

The new terminal building under construction. When completed it will look like a WWII U.S. Navy Corsair airplane (at least look like its shape) complete with “wings”.

A busy sky today – lots of contrails and cirrus clouds. Of course, all airports in the United States have controlled access for security reasons. I like the way the top of the fence blends with the treeline in the distance.

You can find out more about our airport and the City of Fernandina Beach here.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Favorite 2017

In response to this week’s challenge, the last one of 2017.

It was extremely hard for us to choose just one favorite for the year. This one wins out just because it wasn’t planned and everything just had to fall into place with minutes to spare.

Island Church, Southern Charm

A very Merry Christmas to all… and a wish for a peaceful 2018. Our “leaders” in America need to take a chill pill and back off on the war talk. As a retired career U.S. Navy Sailor, in my opinion, the best use of our military might is for keeping the peace and protecting the country. NOT playing into the hands of fanatical “leaders” around the globe.

MAINTAIN the peace, CONTAIN your enemies and RESTRAIN our President. It’s easy to drop bombs on people, it takes a real leader to negotiate peace and foster accords.

Peace
