Happy SUNday! – Kodak EasyShare Max Z990

The Kodak EasyShare Max Z990 was released in 2011 with a 12 MP BSI CMOS sensor. It’s considered a bridge camera, a compact digital with some features and styling of a larger DSLR. It has a 30x optical image stabilized lens made in Germany. I love the bold, bright, and contrasty photos it captures.

Fernandina Beach lifeguard Gavin is standing watch over the beaches of Amelia Island, Florida.
Busy beach.
My three ‘test’ palms.
More expansive view – note the three ‘test’ palms.
Wide angle of about 28mm.
Telephoto at around 800mm.
HDR setting.
Kodak film simulation of ‘Vivid’ is closely associated with Kodacolor film. Sharp and contrasty.
This is a lifeguard stand shot with the camera’s ‘HDR’ setting. Notice how the yellow flag shows movement since HDR takes three images in succession and then combines them into one image.

The Kodak EasyShare Max Z990 is a worthy digital camera from the early 2010s. At 12 MP, it has plenty of resolution for most applications, and its superzoom lens (28-840mm) blows away most other cameras in its class. By the way, all these images are straight from the camera – no post-processing. JPEGs can be sharp and colorful.

Happy SUNday! – (found) pictures of my dad

Pictures of my dad Paul Whelan in Paris in 1945. He was an MP and spent most of the war at the Brooklyn Navy Yard which was just down the street from where he was raised and his family still lived. He wasn’t posted to Europe until later in the war.

A Brooklyn “kid” in Paris. My dad was about 31 in this picture.
My dad was in the CCC before the war started and worked for the NYC Transit Authority.
Great smile and a note for my mom.

Me in 1975 at my first duty station (NAS Pensacola) after Navy Aerographer’s Mate school (weather).

22-years old and still skinny from boot camp.

Happy SUNday! – Navy Times

My Aerographer’s Mate A School class from April 1975. I’m in the second row, third from the left (the tall guy who looks out of place). Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey

We were fresh out of basic training in the above picture. What is an Aerographer’s Mate (AG)? We are meteorologists and oceanographers, flight weather forecasters, tropical weather experts, severe weather predicters, and all around environmental forecasters (land, sea, air, and sub-surface). The rating just celebrated 100 years of service.

December 1989. Naval Oceanography Command Detachment Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. My detachment of fellow Aerographer’s Mates pose for our annual Christmas Card photo. I’m the last guy in the first row to the extreme right. The detachment was located on Naval Station Roosevelt Roads in the Operations Building which was adjacent to the airfield.
Aerographer’s Mates in OA Division onboard the USS Midway (CV-41). I’m the last guy in the far right. Late 1977, underway from our homeport of Yokosuka, Japan.

I served on three aircraft carriers during my 22 year Navy career. The USS Midway (CV-41), USS Forrestal (CV-59), and finally the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). Other duty stations included NAS Pensacola, NAS Jacksonville, and the Naval Submarine Base (NSB) Kings Bay, Georgia. It was a blast!

Our detachment logo in 1990 reflected our support mission to the submarine community (Trident subs).
