SUNday Spotlight – Chasing Classic Cameras – Leica Bits!

Part of the fun of collecting cameras is discovering something you didn’t know existed. In this case, I recently discovered that Leica Leitz made lens cases out of Bakelite (ancient plastic) that held various Leica lenses in the late 1940s and early 1950s (reportedly as early as the mid-1930s).

20200823_093108

The case is designed to hold the lens securely with a small notch for the focus knob.

20200823_093152

There are small numbers embossed in the base, 2729, and on the cap 2617. These numbers do not show up currently on a search of Leica catalog numbers.

The outside of the base of the Bakelite case.

leica french case codes

‘BCDOO’ was the Leica catalog code for the Bakelite lens case for the 3.5cm Summaron. The translation of the French is “Bakelite boxes with screw-thread cover for…”.

Apparently, at some point in time (I don’t know the date of this catalog) these Bakelite cases were offered with the lenses as either a standard accessory or available as a separate option.

Chasing Classic Cameras with Chris – hello Miranda!

Here’s a seldom-seen “system camera” from Miranda first released in 1965. The Miranda G was a one-hit-wonder and was quickly replaced with metered models. I think it was called the Miranda GT when a metered pentaprism was added.

DSCF2051

Exploded view of the Miranda G. Up to three viewfinders were available for use in the system.

DSCF2039

A fast Auto Miranda wide-angle lens (made by Soligor?) – f/2.8 2.8cm

DSCF2047

A focal-plane shutter with speeds from bulb to 1/1000 second.

DSCF2049

There are 8 different focusing screens available for this model.

This beast weighs in at 877 grams as pictured minus film and batteries. Wait, there’s no batteries as this is the meterless prism. Time to break out your hand-held meter because this is basic photography 101 – pure analog.

I wanted to post an advertisement from around 1965 or so with the Miranda G but I couldn’t find any. The G is rather uncommon in any condition.

This wonderful classic is available in my camera shop at http://www.ccstudio2380.com

SUNday Spotlight – Chasing Classic Cameras – Kodak

Happy Sunday to all! Today’s spotlight falls on these two beautiful classics from Kodak. Both are from the early 1900s and they are fully operational.

DSCF0361

Kodak No. 3-A Folding Brownie Camera Model A. This one is from the period 1909-1913.

DSCF0365

The lens is made by Bausch & Lomb Optical Company and the shutter is adjustable for “T’, “B”, and “I”. This model uses 124 roll films.

DSCF0392

Bausch & Lomb Optical Company lens with aperture adjustments from f4 to f128 and shutter speeds of “T”, “B”, 1/25, 1/50, and 1/100 second.

The Kodak pictured above uses 118 roll films that are no longer made but both of these cameras can use modern 120 roll films with the use of adapters on the film spools.

DSCF0397

The black bellows are original to this camera. Previous models had red bellows.

DSCF0404

These cameras are from the collection of well-known New Mexico photographer and writer, Ken Cobean (Hial Kenyon Cobean, Jr.). His photographs and articles appeared in numerous publications including Life, Time, and other well-known magazines.

I attribute the excellent condition of these cameras to excellent care and a favorable environment of the Southwest United States.

Happy SUNday! – pictures at the post office

I haven’t posted my typical ‘Happy SUNday!’ posts in a while given the depressing situation here in the US and as far as the pandemic is concerned, the world. The state that I live in and call home is Florida and it’s been my home for the most part since late 1971.

One of my favorite places to photograph is the local post office here on Amelia Island, the Fernandina Beach post office (Zip 32034). Built in 1911, this beautiful building is a hoot to explore as it’s filled with all sorts of historic details inside and out. So here’s a short photo essay of some of my best shots taken with a wide variety of cameras over the years.

po9

Taken in August 2016 when the building was undergoing a complete restoration. Camera and film: Fujipet (1958 model) 120 roll film camera taking 6x6cm images on Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 film.

Lamppost base – cast iron. Taken in January 2014. Camera: Sony CyberShot DSC-W170.

You have mail. Post office mailbox. Such beautiful detail. January 2014. Camera: Sony CyberShot DSC-W170.

po6

Vintage Yashicaflex AS-II twin-lens reflex camera from 1954 photographed on a vintage table in the post office. January 2015. Camera: Samsung Galaxy S4.

po5

Ink stained wood tabletop from where the inkwell was. January 2014. Camera: Sony CyberShot DSC-D170.

po10

Postmaster’s office ca. 1911. January 2017. Camera: Samsung Galaxy S4.

po7

Metal, glass, and wood. My Yashica Pentamatic on the upstairs wood (heart pine) floor. January 2015. Camera: Samsung Galaxy S4.

po8

Post-restoration of the ca. 1911 post office. January 2017. Camera and film: Fujica GW-690 Professional (1978 model) 120 roll film camera producing 6x9cm negatives. Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 film.

It’s been a while since I’ve photographed the post office. I’ve got some new to me cameras so it’s time to go for a photo walkabout.

Thanks for stopping by and have a beautiful day and be sure to visit my Etsy camera shop at http://www.ccstudio2380.com and my eBay store at https://www.ebay.com/str/auntfotosphotography
