Memories of Yokohama. Another chance to go back in time to 1979.
Carol and I lived in Yokohama from 1977 to early 1980. We have such wonderful memories of our time living there – memories that still make us smile today. Specifically, we lived in US Navy Housing Area 2 (283-D) which was in Honmoku, Naka-ku. Back then it was an industrial area with a refinery (see pic below) close by and of course the port with its thousands of automobiles and small trucks waiting to ship out to the States.

Here, in no particular order, are some street scenes in and around ‘Yoko’. We can tell from our Google Earth visits, that the area has changed dramatically since the Navy left in 1982. There’s an elementary school where our house once stood and the houses we see now are big by what we considered big for Japanese houses back in…

Another look at SSBN 643 on permanent “patrol” in the “waters” of Southeast Georgia.
On permanent display outside the U.S. Naval Submarine Base (SUBASE), Kings Bay, Georgia
Not often do you get to see a submarine surfacing through the earth.
A true Cold War warrior. America deployed the first boomers, the Forty-one for Freedom, to deter the Soviet Union from launching a first strike nuclear attack on the United States.
Love them or loathe them, they prevented a nuclear war with the Soviets and that was their mission.
The new (1980s) Trident class nuclear ballistic submarines (SSBNs) are the latest way to deter an enemy from launching a first strike. They are essentially invisible to our enemies while on patrol – hence the strategic deterrent. Even if all of our land based nuclear capabilities were destroyed in an insane first strike, the Trident fleet would essentially deliver a final blow to our attackers and lessen the chances for a follow on attack. Crazy stuff…

Peace and happiness in the New Year! – Chris
A foggy North Florida morning seemed like the perfect time to grab a shot of my maple trees. This is about as much color as we can get out of these river maples without having a freeze or frost. I’m rather proud of these two as I grew them from seeds taken from one of my other maples in the backyard. I started them in pots and then transferred them to the front yard. I’d guess that these are just shy of ten years old – they’re doing well in the front which gets lots of afternoon sunlight.

One of our favorite blossoms – each flower is different from the next and differs from day to day. This beautiful cactus is in our indoor window garden and right on a cue, it’s putting on a show for Christmas.
