Bald cypress dressed in its best fall fashion (North Florida).
My favorite tree in my yard – I have about fifty of which I planted around fifteen or so. The remainder are “babies” from the original two trees that I planted back in 1991. The bald cypress is a member of the redwood family and some call these trees Eastern redwoods.
Camera and lens – Canon EOS 7D with Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS USM zoom lens.
This one is about 40-50 feet tall. The top of the tree just before the last light of the day. The cones are clearly visible.
Camera and lens – Fujifilm FinePix S9900W with Fujinon 50x 4.3-215mm f/2.9 zoom lens.
This is about the best color my yard will see this autumn. The things that look like balls are actually cones or seed pods that the male bald cypress produces throughout the growing season. They are about the size of a golf ball and just about as heavy. Thanks for stopping by! – Chris

Tucked away in the extreme Northeast corner of Florida lies Amelia Island. Bordered to the north by Cumberland Island, Georgia and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. To the west is the Amelia River and just south is Big Talbot Island. Here is a small sample of what can be discovered on this 13 mile long barrier island.

Its got everything except image stabilization which I need whenever I get above 175mm or so and or have a slow shutter speed (less than 1/125th or so (it’s an age thing).
Here’s some test shots taken with this lens and mounted on my Canon EOS 40D.The 40D is a 10.1 megapixel DSLR from 2007.
ISO 100, f/6.3 1/160 at 130mmISO 100, f/6.3 1/250 at 300mmISO 100, f/6.3 1/250 at 300mmISO 100, f/6.3 1/200 at 300mm
I purposely shot these wide open (f/6.3) at 300mm because that’s where a lens like this will show its weaknesses. They aren’t as sharp as I’d like but they aren’t horrible either. Everything was shot using the self timer to trip the shutter and of course the camera was mounted on a tripod. This lens will perform better at f/11 and a bit shy of 300mm I would think. That will be my next test. Stay tuned.
Thanks for stopping by and have a great evening!

It’s known by many names, Centre Street, Center, Main Street and downtown. Located on beautiful Amelia Island which is the first barrier island along NE Florida’s Atlantic coast – just across the border from Georgia. Take the time to check out the link in this post as you’ll find a host of neat things to read about. Heck we’ve got scoundrels and pirates!
