Friday Fotos! – Photowalk with my 600mm Canon lens.

A few images from a quick photowalk along the Amelia River here in Fernandina Beach this afternoon. What contrasts—industrial ugliness mixed with our natural beauty.

Canon EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM lens with a Canon Extender 2x III. 600mm of reach!

‘Talaria’ Denver, Colorado. That must have been one heck of a trip!
Double-crested cormorant.
Juvenile royal tern (I think).
Tankers for the mills.
Mill one of two along the river. Ugly.
Shrimp boat. Only a few are left.
Crane.

One thing is obvious: Fernandina’s riverfront isn’t dull.

Boats and stacks.

images along the salt marsh

Photographed in the late afternoon along the Amelia River, Crane Island, Florida.

Camera/Lens: Canon EOS R with Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM

In late autumn, the marsh grass becomes a sea of golden brown.
Looking west across the Amelia River.
Playing with light and shadows.
Boardwalk over the marsh.
Framed.

The salt marshes on and along Amelia Island are ablaze with autumn colors. Now that the heat and humidity of summer have passed, it’s a good time to explore the island’s natural beauty.

At the ready.

Contrasts – Industrial Ugly

Amelia Island, Florida. Such natural beauty and then this.

I purposely shot into the sun to catch the reflections in the tidal mud along the Amelia River.

Looking south along the Amelia River at one of the two paper mills on the island (this one since the late 1930s). The other mill is just north of this location and is not in this image.

Amelia Island is stunning – its natural beauty is diverse, and it is almost hard to imagine how pretty it is. Thirteen miles of sandy Atlantic Coast beaches splashed with warm and generally clean seawater. On the west side of the island is this monstrosity. The mills, for the most part, never stop spewing pollution into the air and, more than likely, into the waters. Here is an interesting article written by one of the island’s original families. https://fernandinaobserver.com/general/rayonier-and-container-in-fernandina-a-brief-history-and-reflection/

Amelia Island Walkabout

Tucked away in the extreme Northeast corner of Florida lies Amelia Island. Bordered to the north by Cumberland Island, Georgia and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. To the west is the Amelia River and just south is Big Talbot Island. Here is a small sample of what can be discovered on this 13 mile long barrier island.

Reflecting on reflections – a favorite subject.

Bold reflection of the Fernandina Beach Post Office. Taken with a Fujifilm X-A10 with Canon FD 24mm f2.8 lens.

I think I enjoy the challenge and the opportunities presented by reflections when composing difficult shots. Should both subjects be in focus or only the primary subject? I think of photographing reflections as creating double exposures and I also view reflections as a way of seeing something new in an otherwise ordinary image.

Subtle reflections in a jewelry store window. Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Florida. Taken with a Fujifilm X-A10 with Canon FD 24mm f2.8 lens.
Fujifilm X-A10 with Canon FD 24mm f2.8 lens and Fotodiox adapter. There’s even reflections in this shot which I love to see.
Centre Street, Fernandina Beach, Florida. Reflections in a classic doorway.
Reflected buildings in the late afternoon sun. Amelia Island, Florida.
Natural reflections – the best kind. A summer sky over the salt marsh, Amelia River, Florida.
