Historic District – up close in Fernandina Beach

One of my favorite photo walks is when I focus on the smallest details of our historic city. Fernandina Beach is located on Amelia Island which is located in the extreme northeast corner of Florida’s Atlantic coast. Exit 373 off of I-95.

Door handles are fascinating subjects and the Historic District has plenty to photograph.

At least a centuries worth of paint going on here.

Just outside the main post office in Fernandina Beach (32034) are these wonderful lamp post bases. Circa 1911

Asahi Pentax 6×7 – one that got away*

*Sold actually before I really got a chance to bond with it.

After chasing after a really nice Asahi Pentax 6×7 set I found myself in a familiar place. I had collected bit by bit a nice set in mint condition only to discover I was too hesitant to actually use it. So I sold it for way less than I should have and went with a Fujica GW690 with less features and a few more road miles on it. Turns out it was the right thing to do as I enjoy shooting these larger medium-format cameras as the quality of the images are simply awesome. My advice? The AP and Pentax 6×7 are awesome cameras packed with tons of features but if you just want to go big then check out the Fujica.

Fixed lens, no meter, just lots of detail packed into this beast.

We’re on the final stages of a pretty big kitchen and dining room renovation and while I was assembling another fan for the kitchen this made me smile.

a Yashica classic – Pentamatic ’35’

Yashica’s first ever 35mm SLR. Designed with the help from Nicca, the first Pentamatics were produced in late 1959 and made their debut in the US by the Spring of 1960. Tomioka Optical made a majority of the lenses that were used on all three models of the camera – Pentamatic ’35’, Pentamatic II, and the Pentamatic S. My good friend Paul Sokk has written an excellent piece about the development of this important camera for Yashica. Paul’s site can be found at http://www.yashicatlr.com/Pentamatic.html

Yashica Auto Focus Motor 5 Star – 1981

The Yashica ‘Sailor Boy’ advertising figurine was brought back for the launch of this nifty point and shoot compact. The figurine made its first appearance in 1962 and has cycled through a few retirements since his introduction. He’s holding that camera in this version of the ‘Sailor Boy’.

I’m not sure when Yashica started using the term ‘5 Star’ with this model as the only place I see it mentioned is on the original presentation box.
