Amelia Island Walkabout

Tucked away in the extreme Northeast corner of Florida lies Amelia Island. Bordered to the north by Cumberland Island, Georgia and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. To the west is the Amelia River and just south is Big Talbot Island. Here is a small sample of what can be discovered on this 13 mile long barrier island.

Historic District – up close in Fernandina Beach

One of my favorite photo walks is when I focus on the smallest details of our historic city. Fernandina Beach is located on Amelia Island which is located in the extreme northeast corner of Florida’s Atlantic coast. Exit 373 off of I-95.

Door handles are fascinating subjects and the Historic District has plenty to photograph.
At least a centuries worth of paint going on here.
Just outside the main post office in Fernandina Beach (32034) are these wonderful lamp post bases. Circa 1911

Original post office box from circa 1911.

Thanks for stopping by and if you ever find yourself on I-95 heading south into Florida take Exit 373 – Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach – head 14 miles due east and you’ll be treated to this wonderful gem of a town “trapped” in the late 19th century.

Fujifilm and Fernandina Beach

The Fujifilm Instax Wide 300 does a respectable job under bright sunshine and blue skies. Here’s a few images from a walkabout in the Historic District of downtown Fernandina Beach (Amelia Island), Florida.

I think Fujifilm’s Instax color film is an excellent film as it appears to handle high contrast scenes well. With the limitations of the camera’s lens just don’t expect sharp pics even when focused at infinity.

My town Fernandina Beach – an odd mix of pics

Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Florida – located between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Amelia River to the west, that’s why we’re an island.

Florida brown pelican with the Amelia River in the background. Sorry, no fish for you today!
Industrial ugly! One of two paper and pulp mills on the north end of the island near the downtown historic district.
Rusty and crusty old sign along the river.
Ornate doors greet customers in this Center Street business.
More industrial ugly. Looking south towards mill number two and its giant wood chip mountain.
If you’ve got tracks then you’ve got trains.
Center Street landmark since the late 1800s.
The Palace – Florida’s oldest continually operating saloon.
Gracious old oaks frame a business on Center Street (aka Centre Street).
It’s all in the details both large and small.
Details.
And more details.
