Mamiyaflex and Fuji Film

I’ve always enjoyed collecting classic cameras and often those vintage cameras would have an unused (and sometimes used but undeveloped) film with them. So I naturally decided to start collecting expired film as it is a pleasant reminder of the films that you used in the past.

Dreaming of my Fuji…

The Fujica GW690 (large) medium-format film camera by Fuji. It’s the largest 120/220 roll film camera in my collection and let me tell you, it’s a beast! It boasts an EBC Fujinon f3.5 90mm fixed lens that goes far and above any other film camera I’ve ever used. Check out this unedited image below – the detail that can be captured on a 6x9cm frame of film is amazing.

I love the look of Neopan Acros 100 film and its ability to capture the finest details.

I love the statement – “Light Weight and Compact”. I’m not quite sure that 6x9cm is considered to be a large format camera but who am I to argue with the gang at Fuji Photo Film marketing.

If you’ve never heard about this camera I highly recommend you take a stroll through the various online selling sites and check out this wonderful camera. There are “millions” of them out there so it’s not a difficult camera to chase down. I don’t ever see myself selling this camera as I originally purchased it from Japan at a great price and I love using it (although it’s been a long time). Fujicaflex – Superman as a TLR!

Certainly a tough but worthy camera to chase. As of today, there are only two for sale on eBay and both are in Japan.

Asahi Pentax 6×7 – one that got away*

*Sold actually before I really got a chance to bond with it.

After chasing after a really nice Asahi Pentax 6×7 set I found myself in a familiar place. I had collected bit by bit a nice set in mint condition only to discover I was too hesitant to actually use it. So I sold it for way less than I should have and went with a Fujica GW690 with less features and a few more road miles on it. Turns out it was the right thing to do as I enjoy shooting these larger medium-format cameras as the quality of the images are simply awesome. My advice? The AP and Pentax 6×7 are awesome cameras packed with tons of features but if you just want to go big then check out the Fujica.

Fixed lens, no meter, just lots of detail packed into this beast.

No Love Fuji? The Discovery 90 Date

The plastic fantastic wonders of the 1980s and 1990s generally receive no love – especially looking back on them with our digitized eyeballs in 2017. These overlooked (even when new for the most part) cameras were the bridge cameras for many photographers that were moving away from their bulky SLRs from the 1970s and looking for something easy, carefree and light to take with them on short outings and family get togethers. The 35mm format was the clear winner in the format wars, now manufacturers wanted think-free 35s that were as easy to use as falling outta bed (?).

SUNday Spotlight! – Discovering some Fuji Fun

Fujifilm = Fuji Fun! Here’s a simple but fun to use point and shoot 35mm film camera from Fuji Photo Film Company – 1993. It’s hard to imagine that this camera is now over 25-years-old and it’s never been used.

It features a Fujinon f8 34mm lens with 3 elements in 3 groups. The shutter operates from 1/40 to 1/600 of a second. Built-in automatic flash and of course, red-eye reduction.

The Discovery line from Fuji was very popular with a ton of models produced in the early 1990s. The Discovery 90 Date listed for ¥18,500 in 1993 (about $160 USD).

It has some pretty nice features for such an easy to use camera. That’s the original film that came with the set – it’s expired but still usable.

I replaced the original CR2025 battery with a fresh one and reset the date.

These “Plastic Fantastic” cameras are a joy to use and with its Fujinon 34mm lens produced some quality images especially loaded with Fujicolor film.

Fujica ST 701 35mm SLR Set – 1971

We’ve recently added this beautiful camera set to our online camera shop at http://www.ccstudio2380.com.

We love to collect classic film cameras that are still in their “factory fresh” condition and this totally unused Fujica was a joy to display in our collection.

A test image made with the Fujinon 55mm f/1.8 lens mounted on my Fujifilm X-A10 mirrorless digital camera body via a Fotodiox M42-NX adapter.

I love the look these vintage lenses produce – they’re far from razor-sharp but soft is nice too in this digital age.

The silky-smooth surfaces on this Fujica are stunning.

Fuji Photo Film Company built a wonderful camera when they released the ST 701. I love its clean lines and uncluttered design.
