F4U Corsair Model at the Fernandina Beach Airport Terminal

I finally got the chance to check out the Corsair reproduction that hangs in the airport terminal building here on Amelia Island. The terminal was completed late in 2018 and represents a significant upgrade to the facilities that it replaced. Well done to all involved!

The Corsair was flown by the US Navy and Marines in the Pacific theater of operations during the latter stages of WWII and enjoyed a reputation that was second to none.

Tabletop Studio

I’ve been using a simple to build and simple to use tabletop studio for years. Recently (about 6 months ago) I upgraded my lighting by using two portable battery powered LED lights vice the multi-light fluorescent system I was using. No wires!

The lights are powered by standard rechargeable “Sony” type camcorder batteries that give me about 2 hours of light at 100%. The lights are dimmable.

Mounted on 2 mini tripods the lights are easy to move around and because of their light weight, I often hand hold one to get just the right amount of light exactly where I need it.

Finished product. With very limited post-processing necessary I’m able to process a bunch of images quickly.  My Fujifilm X-A10 is set to the light’s temperature (5,600K) so there’s little for me to adjust on the final image.

I purchased the lights directly from Fotodiox and I believe I got both with shipping for around $300. (prices vary) The lights come with cases for safe transport for location shooting, 4 batteries total, 2 chargers, and some light diffusers and a daylight filter.

I’m happy with the setup but I do need a third light for filling in the background a bit better and for more even lighting when photographing larger subjects.

In the Shop – Canon New F-1 Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Edition

New in my shop today is this awesome Canon New F-1 with AE Finder FN, Canon FD 50mm f1.8 Lens and the Official 35mm Camera of the 1984 Olympic Games Lens Cap (plus all boxes, straps, caps, instruction booklets, warranty cards).

This is the first time that this set has been offered for sale and it’s in nearly perfect cosmetic condition and in 100% fully working (tested) condition.

The best Canon SLR to come out of the early 1980s – by far!

The Canon New F-1 with AE Finder FN is a professional camera that combines a balance between the electronic and mechanical worlds – its electromechanical hybrid shutter provides greater overall accuracy and a wider range of shutter speeds. If the battery fails, you can continue shooting at any of the high speeds or B, all of which are mechanically controlled. A new Energizer battery has been installed and all metering features have been tested. Shutter speeds range from B to 1/2000.

The AE Finder FN is for aperture-priority AE. Full manual exposure control is still possible. Three types of metering are possible – Center-weighted Average Metering, Selective-area Metering, and Spot Metering.

The camera is in mint minus condition as there are a few marks on the baseplate where the motor drive was attached. The remainder of the body, the optics, and the lens are in full mint condition. Two rolls of film have been used with flawless results.

The body serial number, LA 8541 matches the original paperwork from Canon. The lens serial number 7200857 matches its paperwork too. The camera body date code is Y227 which is 1984 and the lens is Y116 which is also 1984. This is a newer model in the LA Olympics run which I believe finished around 9500.

Yashica Pentamatic S 35mm SLR mated with the sharp 5.8cm f/1.7 lens which I believe was designed by Zunow. No direct written evidence to support that claim but the design cues are clearly more Zunow than Tomioka. The camera is from 1961 and the lens is from 1960.

Yashica’s first SLRs represented a steep learning curve for the company.

The original Pentamatic ’35’ was co-designed with Nicca Camera starting in 1958. The camera was groundbreaking for Yashica to be sure but a miss overall against the competition (think Nikon F). Yashica’s best was yet to come. I happen to appreciate the rock-solid construction of this often overlooked camera. The lens was only in production for six months and disappeared from Yashica’s lineup at the same time as Zunow’s demise (January 1961). It was the standard lens for the Pentamatic II. This was not the lens that was supplied with the S – Yashica went back to the 5.5cm, f/1.8

Fuji’s Modern Classic – Discovery Mini Dual Date 35mm P&S Camera

If you’ve been a regular follower of this blog you know that my interests extend beyond just collecting Yashica cameras. One of my passions is collecting still “new in the box” 35mm cameras from the Fuji Photo Film Company – both Fuji and Fujifilm branded 35mm compact camera sets.

Today in my camera shop I’m happy to make available this wonderful Fuji set originally sold through Ritz Camera here in the US. (original sales receipt included)

The Fuji Discovery Mini Dual Date 35mm compact point & shoot camera is one of my favorites – it features a simple button that switches between a 28mm wide-angle Fujinon lens to a more normal focal length 45mm lens. Even the viewfinder switches to show the different view with the lens. Like most of the sets I offer, this one is completely new and in mint condition and has been fully tested with fresh batteries (included).

You’ll get everything pictured here – I’ve kept the original Fujifilm color film that came with the kit (expired) and the original CR123 lithium battery (likely expired) but I’ve added a brand new lithium battery as well as a new Sony button battery for the date/time functions. The camera is a beauty and with all of its features, it qualifies as a modern classic in my book. The Fujinon f3.5 28mm wide-angle lens is fast and sharp and the f5.5 45mm lens is a perfect normal lens for general photography. I’ve used this model in the past and the 28mm lens and autofocus and autoexposure make it a great street camera capable of some nice candids while roaming the streets (use Neopan 100 for some great mood shots).

It’s easy to forget that at one time getting the right amount of light on your subject was no easy task…

Every one of us with a smartphone carries around a powerful “photo machine” in our pockets or purses. Not that long ago, well really a long time ago now when you think about it, these monsters were the epitome of high tech flash units and cameras in the 1950s and 1960s.

Yashica Mat EM – 1964

Pictured above are a fully functional Yashica-Mat EM and Yashica PRO 40 Quick-Lite electronic flash. This was “as-simple-as-it-gets” with a medium format camera in that era. The EM has a built-in exposure meter (not a thru-the-lens type) and the PRO 40 was a straight forward light machine. Both units together with the 8 AA batteries and a roll of 120 film weigh in at nearly 4 pounds! Yikes!

Going even further back in time, this Yashica Flex S is mated with a Minicam flash unit.

The Yashica Flex model S also has a built-in selenium cell light meter made by Sekonic (that little thingy attached to the side of the camera). The cells are located behind the nameplate flap which can be opened to gather more light in low-light situations.

The Minicam flash advertised itself as “sunlight at night”! If you can remember back to the days that these types of flash units were used you can agree – they did make “sunlight at night” as you were often blinded for quite some time afterward.

The Yashica 44 – A ‘Tiny’ TLR

The 44 uses 127 roll film

The easier to handle Yashica 44 TLR (4×4 cm negatives and slides vice 6×6 cm) from early 1959 or so. The leatherette is “dove gray” while the metalwork is “machinery gray”. Yashica made these in about 8 different colors if you count black as a color. From the look of this sales brochure, the 44 was designed with women in mind as an alternative to the bulky and unstylish 66 models that were in use. Many of the Japanese ads from that period feature stylish modern women posing with their new cameras.

This camera has managed to travel to the present in a rather nice condition and the original light gray leather case is intact as is the original box. Many thanks to the good people at the factory in Shimosuwa for their good design and quality construction.

The 44’s colorful original box hints at the wide variety of colors available (although not quite these colors).

Yashica also made the 44 LM which featured a built-in exposure meter (light meter) which you can read about here.

It fits 52mm filter rings and is a snap-on type. It does have a few small marks on the face but nothing distracting. It functions as it should.

Jacksonville’s Airport – 1947

I believe this image is from around 1947 – I’m not positive about the exact date but there are many signs that it’s at least the late 1940s. Eastern Air Lines operated DC-3’s until about 1953.

This picture was taken at a local Jacksonville hotel which had on display a series of historical photos of J’ville back in the day. The image is of an Eastern DC-3 parked on the ramp in front of the Imeson Control Tower at the Jacksonville Imeson Airport.

This colorized postcard was made from that image and was a well-known postcard of the day depicting Jacksonville. I believe the title on the card is wrong as the airport was not known as the Jacksonville Municipal Airport post World War II.

Make note of the Sailor walking towards the building (lower left) – a common site around the airport as Jacksonville is a “Navy Town”.
