Our Airport Terminal – Fernandina Beach

The completion of our new airport terminal is scheduled for June and construction continues at a feverish pace. The terminal is designed to look similar to the WWII US Navy F4U Corsair fighter.

Beach Renourishment on Amelia Island

A never-ending process of replenishing lost sand along our barrier island. The sand is dredged from the St. Marys channel and then pumped on to the beach where heavy duty bulldozers then spread the sand. These operations will go on 24/7 for the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Small Town America – Fernandina Beach

Classic small-town image – Peck High School completed in 1927. It was the only school on Amelia Island, Florida that taught grades 1-12 to African-American students. The good city of Fernandina Beach still uses this building and it is kept in excellent condition. It made for a beautiful picture today on this lovely warm Winter’s day.

Tour Guide – Amelia Island Beach 2.8.18

It’s been a very rough 6 months or so here on Amelia Island – a tropical storm passed nearby and 2 early nor’easters have wrecked havoc on our normally pristine beaches. Our tour today will show us some of the preparations underway for a large-scale beach replenishment project – moving sand from point A to B, C, D, and F.

Just lookin’ for a little peace.

Dredging and then the pumping of sand on to the beach is expected to start around March 1st. Lots of heavy machinery, pipes, and whatnot over the next 2-3 months. When they’re done our beach will be ready for whatever nature has in store this hurricane season.

Submitted for consideration for the Weekly Photo Challenge – Tour Guide

Thanks, Chris

The Last Leaves

It’s been an odd year for our trees weatherwise and otherwise. What with a prolonged spring drought, wildfires into the summer, the close passage of a tropical storm, and then three well established nor’easters, our maritime forest here on the island has taken a quite a beating. Now we have a second hard freeze. These hardy souls are the last leaves in our yard on a bradford pear tree.

It’s technically a bad photograph – I deliberately shot into the sun under breezy conditions so nothing is in focus. I love the shallow depth of field and the sun rays on the left of the image. I’ll check this morning after sunrise to see if the leaves made it through the night.

Do you explore your yard photographically? There’s so much to see. How about a mossy gate on a fence from a different viewpoint?

Technically all of these images are not properly exposed or focused and lack sophisticated techniques in their composition and received no post-production. They’re just shots taken on a whim – but we like them nonetheless.

Thanks for your visit and have a beautiful day!

WPC – Weathered

I find my photography tends to skew towards – weathered “things”, natural and man-made. Here’s a small sample –

Rock On my Weathered Friend

Many thanks to the fine City of Fernandina Beach, Florida – Amelia Island, for providing such a rich palette of weathered things for me to photograph. All of these images were taken within a 3 block area of the Historic District downtown.

Thanks for stopping by!
