USS Midway, still going strong at 80!

Thirty-two years after this picture was taken, I reported to the USS Midway (CV-41) in Yokosuka, Japan. My first carrier and one of the most challenging and rewarding assignments of my then young Navy career. I’m amazed that we’re both still “afloat” after all these years! GO Navy, the Best always have!
She’s basically a battleship with a flight deck.

She’s one of the best US Navy museum ships around.

  1. Hi Chris,

I have always been a fan of the USS Midway CV-41 as well. I never served on her but did serve on USS Kearsarge CVS-33 in the mid 60’s. During a Far East Cruise, etc in 1966. One of my best friends in the Navy (in the 60’s) went on to become the CAG aboard the Midway in the 80’s for the Kadaffi raids. He retired out of the Navy after 30 years as Chief of Satff ComNavAir Pac. His photo is proudly posted on the USS Midway to this day.

    Go NAVY…..

I always enjoy your blog and photos…

    Take care,

    1. Hi Ben,

Thank you for your comments! I served onboard the Midway from 1977 to 1980. We were the first carrier to arrive off the coast of Iran in November 1979. As an Aerographer’s Mate, I briefed CAG and CVW-5 daily on the strike weather all across Iran and of course, issued forecasts and warnings for the TG. At one point, three carriers operated together (Midway, Nimitz, and Kitty Hawk) before the Kitty was sent “home” and the Nimitz completed a world deployment. I have the highest respect for the brave naval aviators that flew their missions 24/7.

I haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Midway museum but, hope to do so one day.

      Regards,

      Chris

      1. Hi Chris,

You likely knew my friend (CAG) from your active duty tour on the Midway. (Name withheld here due to provacy concerns.) He is since deceased, but a very well-respected naval avaitor with an impeccable record. The Midway museum is quite well done. I have visited once and want to visit again sometime

        Take care….

        Ben
