Saturday Snaps – Canon F-1

Canon was the official 35mm camera of the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles.

Beautiful camera.

A well used Canon F-1 on the left (just the right amount of brassing). The camera on the left has the eye-level finder and the one on the right has the AE finder.

And here’s another limited edition F-1 from 1978. Only about 2000 were made in this distinctive olive drab color with this super cool box, special strap and matching OD camera case. Also known as the Canon ODF-1. It appears that this version of the F-1 was only available for sale in Japan.

Fast Glass from Canon & Yashica

A couple of true heavyweights from Canon and Yashica-Tomioka.

DSCF7434

Canon F-1 from 1978 and the Yashica TL Electro X ITS from 1973

The Canon FD 55mm f 1.2 lens is from 1972 which makes it a rather early FD lens. It lacks the S.C. or S.S.C. markings indicating that it’s not coated or at least the marketing people decided not to promote that feature. The Tomioka Optical made lens is an Auto Yashinon 55mm f 1.2 model from very early in the production run. Its serial number puts it about 1968 and it was the 769th made.

DSCF7435

The Canon lens weighs 551 grams vs the Yashica’s 332 grams.

There’s a big difference in weight between the two lenses yet they are both equals in maximum aperture. The Canon takes a 58mm filter and the Yashica uses a 55mm filter.

I hope to be able to do a side by side test of these two lenses using Fotodiox adapters on my Fujifilm X-Series mirrorless digital camera. Stay tuned and thanks for stopping by! – Chris

BTW, the lens weighs 551 grams by itself and this entire set comes in at 2,209 grams! Add 10 AA batteries and film and you’ve earned a trip to the doctor.

Canon Data Back F for the Canon F-1

One of those must-have items from my younger days. When I purchased my first Canon F-1 in July 1978 there were many additional bits of gear that I wanted to add to it. My first purchase was the Canon FD 24mm f2.8 S.S.C. wide-angle lens followed by the Canon FD 80-200mm f4 S.S.C. telephoto zoom lens. Carol got her Canon AE-1 by December so after that we were pretty well set. But I kept wanting a few more bits – the Canon Data Back F was one of them.

Fast forward thirty years and a few months and I finally got my wish.

DSCF6756

Complete set from 1980.

It’s been on display with my other Canon bits in my camera collection – unused but at least I have it!

DSCF6763

In pristine factory fresh condition and fully functional too.

It’s time to downsize my collections so this still new in the box Canon accessory is now available for purchase in my camera shop at http://www.ccstudio2380.com

DSCF6764

A fresh battery installed and fully tested.

It’s designed to replace the film door back on the original Canon F-1.

DSCF6767

The little window houses the LED that imprints the film.

DSCF6765

All sorts of combinations of dates, data, digits, and letters can be imprinted.

DSCF6758

A sturdy plastic case is a perfect home for the back when not in use or on display.

DSCF6762

The original instruction booklet from 1979. Pictured is the Data Back for the A Series of cameras.

So there you have it. If you’ve been looking to add this wonderful Canon collectible to your Canon collection now’s the time to do so. It’s as clean and new as it looks (the pics are from just the other day) and it’s ready to use (or display). Check it out in my shop at http://www.ccstudio2380.com

Thanks! – Chris
