Located in what is known as Old Town (Fernandina Beach) overlooking the Amelia River on the northwest side of Amelia Island. Originally built around 1870 for a harbor pilot Captain Bell and the second owner was also a river captain in 1901. Located on a high bluff at 212 Estrada Street, it overlooks the former Spanish fort San Carlos (c1811).
It’s a lovely house that’s been restored and maintained throughout the decades. It stood in as Pippi Longstocking’s house in the late 1980s movie “The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking”… “The house was altered and remodeled through the years. When movie producers came calling in 1987, it was its original weathered white with hunter green shutters. The house stood in for Villa Villekulla, the fictional home of Pippi, a character in a series of books written by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. The young girl lives alone in a small Swedish village sharing the house with her monkey and horse. She befriends the two children living next door, Tommy and Annika Settergren, and they have many adventures together.”
Today it is a private residence and is not open for tours. It’s a very easy to photograph house because of the large open area in front of the house (actually Fernandina Plaza Historic State Park).

If you find yourself near Amelia Island it is well worth the visit (don’t miss the 40 block Historic District of Fernandina Beach while you’re at it).

Now don’t get us wrong by the title of our blog post – we enjoy our wonderful big little city to our south, Jacksonville, Florida. Lots of neat things to see and do there. The Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL play their home games just down the St. Johns River from downtown. Then there’s a world class arena and a really nice baseball stadium (The Baseball Grounds) or something like that where the Jacksonville Suns Double AA professional baseball team plays (I’m sorry, they’re the JUMBO SHRIMP now)… I guess Suns was too plain.
The image below is looking north across the St. Johns River which shows a nice condo under construction and a small marina with some yachts in it. The lovely beige building behind it? Glad you asked.
It’s the Duval County Jail! Or as it is officially known, the John E. Goode Pre-trial Detention Facility. A jail for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO). The jail was built in 1991 so you can’t say the condo builders didn’t know. It’s probably sitting on some pretty valuable property now, but back in 1991 not so much.
Oh well. It’s Jacksonville, funny Jacksonville.
Oh and here’s the arena – just down from the jail.
That’s the baseball grounds in the background left and the stadium for the Jaguars is just to the right of this picture. Boating is very popular.
Lots to see and do if you escape from the JSO.

While recovering some lost images from my now deceased hp laptop, I came across these pics that I’m somewhat proud of. Why? Because taking pictures in Disney World is not easy. How many times can you take the same shot over and over? How do you look at something that you’ve seen hundreds of times and still find an interesting point of view? How do you make the thousands of people “go away”?
Here’s some examples –
Cindy’s Castle from behind. A tight crop in the camera while pointing it nearly straight up with a wide angle lens. A dramatic sky helps too.
No peeps view! I had to wait until the last person cleared the bridge. I like the sky in this one too and it’s shot from a Tomorrowland viewpoint.
While driving (slowly) I held the camera out the driver’s side window… no they wouldn’t let me get out of the car to take this shot. How many times have I driven under that sign and wanted to take a picture???
Another tight crop in the camera while holding the camera over my head to make the people go away. Gorgeous day too!

One of our favorites – along the south bank of the St. Johns River in almost downtown Jacksonville.

As seen on an abandoned souvenir shop along a Florida highway. At first glance I thought that they sold film and what not as they were the first stop in extreme Northeast Florida for southbound tourists. Cold drinks, smokes, candy, stuffed gators and Florida junk like that. But I got to thinking that it might have meant films as in movie films. This building was left to rot many decades ago and right next door is a closed motel on the same property. Some locals say that the souvenier shop showed movies from time to time for the guests at the motel and some of the bored to death locals. Makes sense as it was in the middle of nowhere and back in the 1960s or earlier that would be a draw.
Anyway, cool old faded signage regardless of what went on. ^.^
