Thanks Simon!!!

20170506_162457

As a retired United States Navy Sailor of 22 years, this made my day a bit more enjoyable! While shopping at The Avenues Mall in Jacksonville, Florida, I spotted this open parking space pretty close to the entrance to the mall. To my surprise I saw this sign. Since there wasn’t any open spots nearby, it was appreciated  for two reasons. First for saying thanks for my service, and second that a non veteran didn’t snatch the spot. Why? Because Jacksonville is a Navy Town and the locals know how to treat a Sailor! lol

Anyway, thanks to the Simon Property Group for their simple gesture of support. Let’s give a big “Shout Out” to The Avenues Mall and Simon!

And remember… “Go Navy, The Best Always Have”!

West Mims Wildfire – Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge

The wildfire has been burning for just about a month now (it started from a lightning strike on April 6) in the West Mims area of Georgia’s Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge in Southeast Georgia – just north of the Florida state line. The area has been exceedingly dry this past Winter and the Spring rains have been too infrequent to make a difference in the conditions in the refuge.

Satellite image (visible) just before local sunset. The extensive smoke plume from the West Mims Wildfire is dramatically visible in this image as the long trail of grayish white smoke streams to the southeast from the fire across much of North Florida and out over the Atlantic Ocean well out to sea some 200 to 300 nm from the fire. The air quality in Jacksonville, Florida (extreme Northeast Florida) today was terrible with severely reduced visibilities on the ground and aloft up to around 3,000 feet. Another wildfire can be seen burning just north of the Tampa Bay area.

The West Mims Wildfire has burned nearly 110,000 acres of the refuge and is now threatening the town of St. George, Georgia. Without significant rainfall soon, the wildfire could burn for another 6 to 9 months as it consumes the exposed and dry peat that makes up the most of the refuge’s area. The Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge is the largest freshwater swamp in the United States.

A view of the dense smoke from the wildfire over the skies of Southern Jacksonville – well over 70 miles away from the actual fire. This is what it looked like from the ground beneath that plume seen on the satellite image.

The ‘Swamp’ has burned frequently and extensively in the recent past – a wildfire in 2011 burned for about 3 months before the rains from Tropical Storm Barry aided in stopping the fire. Another major wildfire in 2007 burned for nearly a year and the air quality was dramatically compromised throughout all of Northeastern Florida and Southeastern Georgia.

Fuji Photo Film – Fuji Pet 35

From 1959, Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. follow-up to their widely popular Fujipet 120 film camera. The Pet 35 took advantage of the growing popularity of 35mm photography – plus it’s a great way to sell more film!

The Pet 35 was way more sophisticated than the Fujipet – but retained the funky charm and quirkiness of the original. Since the Pet 35 is not a common camera, we’ve presented a visual tour of our almost mint condition Pet 35.

DSCF5186

Original set as found. We have the leather case too.

DSCF5188

The lens is a Fujinar-K 3 element glass lens – 45mm with a maximum aperture of f/3.5 with closest focussing to 0.5 meters.

DSCF5189

The lever to the right of the lens cocks the shutter and the left lever trips the Copal B leaf shutter.

DSCF5190

The Copal shutter features speeds of B, 1/25, 1/50, 1/100 and 1/200 of a second.

DSCF5191

In keeping with the funky design – two oversized knobs that left no doubt on how to operate them.

DSCF5192

The body is dark gray on this Pet 35.

DSCF5193

Outer ring is the focus adjustment, next is the shutter speed selector and finally the aperture settings.

Early 1960s Fuji Film Neopan SS – ASA 100. How about film for only ¥190!

DSCF5202

Original selling price was ¥3,400 – the leather case sold for ¥700 and a soft case was available for ¥350

Original sales brochure specs.

DSCF5208

The viewfinder is bright and clear – and big for such a small camera.

ASA reminder scale and film back release.

DSCF5206

The Pet 35 is far from being a ‘toy camera’ as its build quality is quite high. No foam or yarn light seals to fail – the metal film door fit tightly into the body to seal out light.

DSCF5209

Gotta love the Fuji Film stickers inside!

Thanks so much for your visit – we hope that you enjoyed our tour of this fantastic Fuji!

Sansui G-9000

Pure Power! That’s how the sales rep from Sansui pitched it to us at the U.S. Navy Exchange in Yokosuka, Japan in 1978. It is a monster!

Here’s a peek inside –

Sadly we don’t own it anymore – a casualty of downsizing our home. It could rock in its day and rattle the windows! They sell on eBay now for solid money.

Canon AE-1 Program – An alternative to the more costly A-1

Canon’s A Series of cameras were among the best in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Often overlooked, the Canon AE-1 Program (it was also available in a pro black body) was a fun and accurate SLR during its heyday. Of course the Canon A-1 and the AE-1 were the most popular of all.

DSC00146

DSC00137

The AE-1 Program, like all of the Canon A Series of bodies, used the Canon FD lenses – here with the popular and super lightweight 50mm f/1.8 lens.

If you get a chance to pick one of these up for a fair price we think you’ll be surprised at how well the auto exposure modes do under challenging lighting situations. It’s not built as robustly as the A-1 but can be had for much less.

The AE-1 P makes a nice addition to any Canon collection and certainly would look good in any collection of early Japanese SLRs.

Thanks for stopping by!

Pirate de Cat

Pirate being Pirate –

A much younger Pirate (8 years ago) hanging out with me in the woods. He’s 15ish now and doesn’t climb trees anymore, doesn’t hear all that well and his eyes are a bit dim, but he’s still the best cat we’ve ever had.
